Let's be honest, that's why most of you read this blog!
What are we up to lately? I know I've tweeted and facebooked some twin updates but for those of you who don't follow me or aren't friends, here's what's going on with our lives...
We saw the GI dr for our follow-up. He was ok with their reflux progress. They only spit up a slightly excessive amount now, as opposed to the gallons of projectile vomit that once covered my entire body...and floor...and couch...every day...for many months. Welcome to my life. I smell like rotting milk, although now the smell is much more subtle. Please be my friend.
He was unhappy with Jack's weight though.
Here's the breakdown. When you're born you grow fast. Then it kind of plateaus out and slows down a bit. Don't worry, I've provided a chart. I'll go 6th grade science fair for you...
Source
Jack is following the curve like a 7 month old. He grew really fast and has leveled off. He's following the curve...just a few pounds below the minimum line.
A preemie is supposed to grow fast, and then faster. Another chart? Ok, you twisted my arm.
Source
Amelia is following the preemie chart and growing even faster than before (although she is still smaller than Jack, but not by nearly as much anymore).
Since she's still growing at a faster rate, they're ok with her growth and she'll eventually break into the growth chart if she keeps it up. Jack won't though. So he needs more calories. Since he's reached a peak volume (around 25oz a day) for his weight, we need to add more calories, not volume. So we got a few handouts and "recipes" of complicated ways we can add more calories to breast milk and formula. Super. In my free time, I'll study up on that.
So we're following our little handouts and so far, I think it's working. He feels heavier and looks chubbier in just a week or so! So we're anxious for a weight check, which we'll be getting on Friday.
We also had a dr's appointment for Jack's lovely skin. I've mentioned his allergy issues. He also had a mean case of diaper rash, which we're assuming was part of the allergic reaction. Essentially, because I don't have anything else to do, I spent the past week or so scrubbing down the house, washing all of his clothes, blankets, play mats and everything he touches. We've switched soaps and detergents for the whole family and I've stopped wearing perfumes and make-up. (Rotten milk smell is the new cool thing...I'm losing friends as we speak aren't I?) We cut back on our solid food eating and went back to rice cereal, which I made myself to ensure no extra stuff to be as "allergy free" as possible. We also lathered his skin for a few days in hydrocortisone and vaseline.
What has all this gotten me? A headache? A stamp in the Coffee Addicts of America Club?
All of the above, as well as a baby boy who is rash free. We're going to keep bubble mode for the next week, sans hydrocortisone, then we'll start easing up and see if he breaks out again.
And as for Amelia, she's growing well and her skin is as soft as ever. Thank you Dove Sensitive. Luckily, she takes it easy on me so I don't stress out constantly. She's been pretty healthy. Mostly. Usually. I'll take it ;)
So that's our lives lately in a nutshell. Nothing too exciting or interesting. Just lots of craziness in the world of preemie twins. And I love every second of it. Minus the doctors visits. I could live without those.

Random Friday
True story...I spent 20 minutes sitting in my car yesterday in my garage. The twins had finally fallen asleep on our drive home and I didn't want to wake them up. I seriously considered just leaving them in there and going in the house to start dinner. Finally Jack started stirring and I took them inside, where they proceeded to scream their faces off. I should have taken a nap in the car with them. Lesson learned.
When Jack cries, I rush to see what's wrong. When Amelia cries, I give her a good 5 minutes or so to see if she's serious. Play favorites much? Actually, I think she cries wolf too much. It's never too early to learn a lesson.
Jack's new favorite activity is playing patty cake. We need to find a new activity because I am sick of rolling and patting and marking with a B...
The new hypoallergenic soap makes Amelia's skin so soft and pretty...as if she could get any prettier right? Touching Jack is still like touching an alligator. Amelia must have stolen all the pretty in utero. Poor Jack.
This blanket was not washed with our new hypoallergenic detergent. Sorry if you break out in a rash big guy.
Speaking of a big guy....Jack gained 7oz in 2 days on his new high calorie diet. I might get my dream of a chunky baby after all!
Amelia has been crying the entire time I've been writing this post....that's what you get when you cry wolf ;)
Have a happy random Friday everyone!

I need more coffee in my life
See those spots? They're all over poor Jack's skin and they're apparently an allergy. To what? That's today's million dollar question. So when the lung issues, reflux, and weight issues aren't enough, allergies come out to play. Who loves them a preemie? This mom! And his sister...or she at least likes eating his foot. Whatever works ;)

March For Babies
Just wanted to let everyone know that we're going to be doing the March for Babies in Los Angeles on April 28! I'm super excited to get out there, support the March of Dimes and meet other moms of preemies. Thanks to the research of March of Dimes and everyone who has suported them, my babies are alive and doing so well, so we really want to take a chance to give back!
To help me out, consider donating to my fundraising page! The link is on the sidebar!
We're excited to get more involved with March of Dimes and help out other preemies and preemie parents!
I'm also going to be collecting knitted or crocheted baby beanies to donate to the NICU in Johnstown that took care of my babies. If you have skills (unlike me haha) and want to donate a beanie, please shoot me an email! emily.pepka@gmail.com When we go back to visit the NICU this summer, I'm hoping to bring them a stash of beanies.
We had to use the generic hospital hats for MONTHS until they were big enough to fit in newborn hats. Every time they left the isolette they had to wear a hat because they couldn't keep their body temperatures well and they lose the most heat from their heads. So it's important to have a warm head, but not so cute wearing the hospital hat. Preemies also have incredibly sensitive skin so it's imporant to have something very soft that won't damage or rub away at their skin.
So consider making a beanie. I can give you measurements for how big the twins noggins were when they were born so you can get an idea of how small they need to be to fit preemies. And preferrable hats that are gender specific so mommy and daddy can get some cute pictures with their little ones, even when they're stuck for weeks or months in the hospital!
Anyone who wants to help out or join in our efforts and be a part of all this, just email me! You have no idea how much it means to preemie parents that someone is thinking about them while they're in the hospital for endless hours day after day taking care of their little ones.
Just look at these faces...you know you want to help ;)

Confessions of a Twin Mom
Sometimes...I don't make dinner on purpose so Tom either has to make something or we have to go out/take out.
Sometimes...I go for walks just as an excuse to chit chat with neighbors AKA adults.
Sometimes...I leave their clothes on for a few spit up episodes before I change them. Because I just can't be changing outfits every 10 minutes.
Sometimes...I leave the housework undone and laundry piling a little too high, just so I can have extra time to cuddle with my munchkins.
Sometimes...I don't eat lunch. Ok, usually I don't eat lunch.
Sometimes...I let the twins cry a little longer than I probably should, just so I can sit down for just 1 second longer.
Sometimes...I sneak out of bed before the twins so I can enjoy a cup of coffee before the craziness begins. Sadly, they can usually tell I left the room and they spazz out. How do they know?? Not ok.
Sometimes...I let my babies watch tv, because I know it keeps them entertained and happy (usually) and then I can catch up on my DVRed shows while pumping for the 109385081305 time of the day.
Sometimes...I use tummy time as an excuse to wear them out so they'll nap.
Sometimes...I let them nap in their swing, just so they'll nap for a long time and I can get something done.
Sometimes...I just want to lay in bed all day cuddling with my babies. Because I'll never get these moments with them back and I want to soak them all up as much as possible.
Always...I love being a mom of twins :) Yes, I have my hands full. Yes, they're absolutely worth it.
Even when they won't smile for the camera, no matter what ridiculous toy I'm flailing around in the background.

Some 7 Month Stats
Well I already told you what they're up to at 7 months old but here at some numbers for you!
Jack, as of about a week ago was 12lbs 13oz and 26 1/2 inches long. This was about 3 weeks from our last weight check, so he's gained about a pound and an inch since then! He's not getting too chunky but he is going to be tall! He's in the 28 percentile for a 7 month old baby in height. Not too shabby kid ;) He's barely on the 4 month old growth chart for weight though, and not even close to the 7 month old weights.
Amelia is 12lbs 1oz and 25 1/2 inches long! She's going to be tall I think too! She gained 22oz last month! So she's finally starting to catch up with Jack! She's about 5th percentile for height for a 7 month old. And just like Jack, doesn't get close to any charts for her weight. They're skinny babies.
We have an appointment with the GI doctor next week to go over their eating and weight gain. That will be the only weight check that we have scheduled until well into February so I guess we'll have to go weigh them at the super market to get an idea of how they're growing ;)
They're not chubby kids but they're long and healthy so I guess I can be ok without them being skinny little things :)

When You Were 7 Months Old
Dear Jack and Amelia,
I can't believe it's been 7 months since the day you came into this world. You were so tiny! Mommy and Daddy were very scared. But we have survived the past 7 months and you are thriving now!
At 7 months old, you're now both sitting up with just some help with your balance! Jack was wobbly for a few weeks longer than Amelia but you both sit up now like champs!
At 7 months old, your favorite toy was the kicking piano play mat. You love the mirror and the piano. You both kick like crazy! You're working on that leg strength so you can run around in a few months!
At 7 months old, you finally fit into 3-6 month clothes. Ok, I'm just excited Amelia is finally in 3-6 month clothes. Jack has been in them for awhile. You both finally broke into the growth chart for a 7 month old in height. You're still skinny minnies dancing below in weight, but you'll get there :)
At 7 months old, you smile and laugh like crazy. Amelia, you only laugh on an inhale, which makes you sound like you're choking. It hurts your throat but you keep on laughing so it can't be that bad ;)
At 7 months old, you both mostly sleep through the night! Woohoo! Amelia will sleep from 8pm-6am. Jackson will sleep from 8pm-8am. I love all the extra sleep but kind of miss all the late night cuddles ;)
At 7 months old you're both big gabbers. You talk and talk and talk. I really wish I could understand you because a lot of your stories seem very interesting.
At 7 months old you've eaten bananas, butternut squash, avacado and sweet potato. Amelia's favorite is the squash. Jack loves bananas. You eat solid food once a day and get better at it every day! You still get tons and tons of mommy's milk, eating 6 times a day or so, but you are enjoying real food a lot too.
At 7 months old, your favorite time of the day is bath time. You cry for an hour before it's time for your bath, as soon as you get in the tub, you're all smiles and laughs. You play with the toys Uncle Nick got you for Christmas and get scared when you splash yourself in the face with water. You kick and splash and play. I think you'd stay in there for hours if I let you.
At 7 months old, we think you like each other! You hold hands when we read you stories. You chit chat with each other when we lay you next to each other. You smile and laugh at each other. You also punch each other in the face and try to scratch each others eye's out. Your favorite activity though is to eat your brother or sister's arm. For some reason, their arm tastes better than your own. We'll work on that sibling love ;)
At 7 months old, you make your mommy and daddy so happy every day. You make us smile and laugh. We love to play with you and feed you. We love every second of being your parents, even when you're fussy. We're so lucky to be your parents and so lucky to have such amazing babies like you!
We love you for everything that you are, and everything that you will be. Happy 7 months my sweet babies.
Love,
Mommy and Daddy
